DIY Deodorant

Aluminum salts, synthetic perfumes, parabens and so many other unreadable ingredients are listied on store-bought deordorants. While there are many different studies regarding the impact these ingredients have on our bodies (cancer, allergies, hormonal imbalances, etc), we prefer to ere on the natural ingredients side of things (obviously!). We simply sleep better at night this way.

diy natural deodorant

We tried so many natural deodorant recipes before finding the ones that suited us best. Each person is so unique in their own way! The same goes for all the (good) bacteria found on our skin. They are the ones responsible for the odors developed when they encounter the sweat in our armpits. This is why one recipe can be the ultimate win for one and a total disaster for another.

.Therefore, here are two tried and true recipes. Both are simple and work wonders on each of us, the beauty in them both is that you can make them at home. Everyone can find their winner with a spray bottle option or a more traditional stick option.

Try them out and see what works best for you!

Laurie’s recipe (spray on)

Materials/Ingredients

  • Spray Bottle
  • Small funnel
  • Essential oils (Palmarosa, Tea tree, etc)
  • Grain alcohol

How-to

  1. Fill the bottle with grain alcohol
  2. Add 25 drops of Palmarosa oil, 10 drops of Tea Tree oil and then another 10 drops of your prefered essential oil (Geranium, Lavender, Sandal wood, Patchouli, etc)
  3. Stir then spray onto armpits.

This recipe is very similar to putting on perfume, so make sure you select essential oils that you like, and trust me, you will only receive compliments regarding your odor !

You can always spray again throughout the day, if needed.

Stéphanie’s recipe (stick option)

Materials/Ingredients

  • Scale

  • Empty deodorant container

  • Pot

  • Pyrex container

  • 20g of arrowroot starch or cornstarch

  • 12g of aluminum-free baking soda

  • 8g of soy wax

  • 15g of coconut oil

  • 10g of zinc oxyde

  • 15g of shea butter

  • A few drops of essential oils (Palmarose, Tea Tree etc)

  1. Melt the soya wax in a double-boiler, along with the shea butter and coconut oil.

  2. When everything is melted and well-combined, let cool for 1 or 2 minutes
  3. Then add the remaining ingredients.
  4. Mix together and pour into the stick containers.

This mix will take at least 24 hours before it sets.

If your skin is sensitive, simply do not add any baking soda to the recipe.
